The hallways are strangely quiet as I walk towards the wing where Sophia is being held. People are standing around in small groups, whispering to each other. I try to ignore it, but I keep catching the words ‘Virus’, ‘Oasis’ and ‘Cure’ as I speed-walk down the halls, my head down.
Right now I just need to see Sophia. After that, I’ll deal with everything else. I can’t even think about Mark, not right now. It’s too much.
I take a sharp turn down the corridor leading to the temporary housing unit and stop in front of the third door down. I go inside, but she’s not there.
Maybe I got the wrong door. I turn on my heel and walk back into the hallway, pulling open the next door in the corridor, but she’s not there either. I pull open the next door, and the next, but she’s not in any of them.
The next room doesn’t open at all, and I wonder if she’s been put back into the evaluation chambers. My anger starts rising in the back of my throat, until I hear a voice behind me.
‘Quincy.’ I spin around to see Silas standing in the corridor, arms crossed. He must have followed me. ‘She’s not there.’
My heart stops.
‘I moved her into the communal sleeping wing an hour ago. She’s been placed in the bed next to yours.’
My breath shudders out of me, but for a moment I don’t even try to move, though every instinct in me tells me to go find her, make sure she’s okay, make sure he’s telling the truth.
‘Why?’ I ask. ‘Why did you move her?’
Silas regards me for a moment. ‘I want you to know that if you go, I’ll ensure her safety.’
‘You want me to go?’ I ask. ‘Someone you barely know, let alone trust? Why would you want me to do that?’
‘Because you’re not afraid. And everyone else is afraid.’
‘What?’ How could I not be afraid? Everything is falling apart, crumbling away.
‘Have you ever heard of the concept of the fight-or-flight response? It proposes that our only two responses to danger are either to fight or to run. But there’s a third reaction: freezing. Too many people would prefer to play dead than to fight back against Oasis. I need fighters now more than ever.’
I move forward guardedly. ‘And?’
‘And what?’
‘And what else?’ I press. ‘Jay’s a fighter. More so than I am. You could argue that he’s unreliable, but you know well that he’s not much more unreliable than I am. There are the people who have nothing left to lose, the people who are so loyal to you and Genesis that they’d gladly give their lives, and the freedom-fighters so hellbent on being in the history books that they’d prefer to die fighting than to live to see a day when they wouldn’t have to.’ I come to a halt right in front of him. ‘Yes, I’m a fighter, but you have no shortage of them. So why are you here, in
